These scientists wanted to make a special device called a thermoelectric device work better at room temperature. They found that the device had some problems, so they decided to try and fix those problems to make it work even better. They worked hard to reduce the defects in the device, which are like little mistakes that can make it not work as well. By doing this, they were able to make the device perform much better even when it's not too hot or too cold outside.
