Genetic drivers of heterogeneity in type 2 diabetes pathophysiology. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38374256/)
These scientists wanted to understand more about a disease called Type 2 diabetes, which can affect people's health. They studied the genes of a large group of people, over 2.5 million individuals from different backgrounds. They found 1,289 different genetic signals that are linked to Type 2 diabetes, with 145 signals that were new discoveries.
The scientists then grouped these signals into eight different categories based on how they are related to other health traits like heart disease and kidney problems. They also looked at specific types of cells in the body, like the ones in the pancreas and fat tissues, to see how these genetic signals might be affecting them.
By doing this study, the scientists were able to create a way to predict a person's risk of developing certain complications of Type 2 diabetes, like heart disease and kidney issues, based on their genes. This information could help doctors provide better care to people with diabetes around the world.
